Citrus Heights California adds K9 unit

The 3 year old Citrus Heights Police Department,one of the areas youngest, is following a well worn path in adding a K9 unit. The Department sees police dogs as a good investment even in an era of tight bugets.

With three expierenced dogs on the street and another in training, continued development of the teams is a priority of the Department. The teams are trained for handler protection, drug detection and missing person tracking.

Lt. Ray Bechler, the K9 unit commander, said police departments consider K9 Teams too valuable to cut and the department will add more units in th future.       

Massachusetts K-9 Helps Nab Convicted Rapist

A convicted rapist wanted by police for failing to register as a sex offender was arrested on Saturday with the help of a Massachusetts state police dog.

Officals learned that the individual was planning to meet his mother in Medford Saturday night. Troopers , along with a K-9 unit, established surveilance of the area.

At 6:57 pm troopers observed the individual get into his mothers car and immediately converged on the scene. The individual got out of the car and attempted to flee. The troopers ordered him to stop. When he did not K-9 "Drago" was deployed and apprehended him.

The convicted rapist was taken to a hospital for treatment of laceratons he suffered when "Drago" took him down."Drago" was not injured.
